CSI - Cup Strength Index

How CupIndex's Cup Strength Index (CSI) measures team strength using Elo ratings.

Quick Answer

CSI (Cup Strength Index) is an Elo-based rating measuring team strength, starting at 1500 points. Points are exchanged after each match based on results and opponent strength. Teams with CSI above 1540 are world-class, while 1580+ indicates elite tournament favorites.

How CSI Score is Calculated
CSI Rating Tiers
CSI (Cup Strength Index) is CupIndex's proprietary team strength rating system.

What is CSI?

CSI is an Elo-based rating that measures relative team strength:
• All teams start at 1500 points
• Points are exchanged based on match results
• Expected outcomes affect point exchange
• Higher CSI = stronger team

How CSI is Calculated

After each match:
• Winner gains points, loser loses points
• Point exchange depends on: - Match result (win/draw/loss) - Score margin - Pre-match CSI difference - Match importance (World Cup stages)

CSI Formula

K × (Actual - Expected)

Where:
• K = Weight factor (higher for important matches)
• Actual = Match result (1 for win, 0.5 for draw, 0 for loss)
• Expected = Probability based on CSI difference

CSI Tiers

| Tier | CSI Range | Description | |------|-----------|-------------| | Elite | 1580+ | Tournament favorites | | World Class | 1540-1579 | Strong contenders | | Strong | 1500-1539 | Competitive teams | | Average | 1460-1499 | Capable but limited | | Developing | Below 1460 | Underdogs |

Why Use CSI?

• More accurate than FIFA rankings for cup tournaments
• Updates after every match
• Considers opponent strength
• Accounts for margin of victory
